Two events to honour the remarkable work of socialist suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst, the so-called ‘forgotten’ daughter of Emmeline and sister of Christabelle, are being held in Hackney, east London, this month.
Organised by campaigning group Hackney Unites, the meetings are part of local celebrations marking 100 years since the first women won the right to vote in UK Parliamentary elections.
The first is at Hackney Museum on International Women’s Day itself (8 March) from 5:30pm. The museum is also running an exhibition on 100 years of women’s activism in the borough.
The second is on 20 March as part of a ‘change-makers’ series organised at New Unity @ Newington Green (described as ‘the birthplace of modern feminism’). There are still tickets for this event, but register here now to avoid disappointment.
Both evenings will be fun and informative, say the organisers, while asking what we can learn from the past, and how we can advance the cause of women today.
