“Public ownership used to be out in the wilderness; now it’s all the rage,” claims the publicity for an event organised by the Independent Working Class Education Network to debate the future shape of the public sector and how to campaign for different models of public ownership.
The day school, called ‘Public Ownership: what would it look and feel like?’, is a collaboration with campaign group We Own It and Unite the Union to be held at Unite’s London headquarters on 19 May.
Featuring a mix of debate, videos, group discussions and workshops, the meeting will look at who owns the public sector and why it matters, at how public ownership worked in the 1970s, at the pros and cons of regional, national and cooperative models, and at barriers to achieving them.
It will also examine Labour’s manifesto commitments to nationalisation, local examples such as the Preston model, and how to campaign for greater public ownership.
