A session on lessons for Labour from the inter-war ILP will be at the heart of Chartist’s Annual General Meeting in London on Saturday 7 July.
The second session in the Labour left magazine’s day-long programme called ‘Can Labour find winning ways?’ will be addressed by leading Labour historian Ian Bullock, author of Under Siege: The Independent Labour Party in Interwar Britain.
In the book, which came out late last year, Bullock charts the context and consequences of the ILP’s disaffiliation from Labour in 1932. He argues that the interwar ILP made a lasting contribution to British politics in general, and to the modern Labour Party in particular, by preserving the values of democratic socialism.
His Chartist AGM talk, called ‘The Independent Labour Party – lessons for today’, follows an opening session on ‘Brexit, Labour and the alternative’ with Marina Prentoulis of the University of East Anglia and Catherine West, Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green.
Bryn Jones, co-editor of Alternatives to Neo-Liberalism – Towards Equality & Democracy, and Prem Sikka of Sheffield University are the main speakers for a session on ‘After Neo-liberalism: Making corporate capital accountable’, while Momentum’s role in developing Labour’s alternative will be the focus of the final discussion between Becky Boumelha and Apsna Begum (both of Momentum) and Chartist’s own Duncan Bowie.
