Early ILPer and champion of women workers Mary Macarthur will be the subject of the Working Class Movement Library’s first online talk on Wednesday 8 April.
The talk, by historian Cathy Hunt, is part of the library’s ‘invisible histories’ series and was originally planned to take place in the Salford Library itself but has been switched online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
When Macarthur died in 1921 it was said she had done more for women workers than any other person in the British labour movement.
Hunt’s newly published biography of the dynamic, charismatic trade union leader is the first full length study to appear for nearly 100 years. Called Righting the Wrong: Mary Macarthur 1880-1921, The Working Woman’s Champion, it is available to order here.
In her talk, Hunt will examine the life and times of Macarthur and the continued relevance of her work today.
The event, described as “an experiment” by the Library, is to take place at its original date and time of Wednesday 8 April, 2-3pm. Those with a computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone can log in to see and hear the talk.
Log-in details will available nearer the time from the WCML website.
