We are living in increasingly perilous times where the political ground shifts so rapidly and frequently that making sense of where we are and how we should respond is more and more difficult.

With Trump wreaking havoc in the USA, Putin still waging war on Ukraine, and genocidal conflict in the Middle East, threats to progress, democracy, equality and social justice lurk towards us from every direction.

At home, the Labour government continues to pin its hopes on a single idea – economic growth – underpinned by fiscal and social policies that seem to come from the playbook of neoliberalism, promoting further deregulation and a potential return to austerity.

How should the left respond to these new challenges? What should it demand of the Labour government? And how do we start to make sense of the continuing rise of the far right?

Most importantly, how do we join with others to defend progressive values and develop radical opposition and alternatives?

The ILP is holding an open meeting in Sheffield on Saturday 10 May to discuss these issues. Please join us at The Circle from 12.30pm for a friendly, free and far-reaching discussion.

The afternoon will also include a reading from author Bill Broady who will talk about his recent historical novel, The Night Soil Men, based on the origins and development of the Independent Labour Party.

Entry is free to all, but please book your place in advance using this form.
