Andrew Gamble and Jon Cruddas are two of the speakers who will feature in the Sheffield-based School of Democratic Socialism’s new lecture series called ‘There has to be a better way’.
Gamble, professor of politics at Cambridge University, will explore the current state of the left and prospects for its renewal at the first meeting this Wednesday (17 October). He will examine the mixed legacy of new Labour, the advent of the coalition, the politics of the financial crash and the recession, and the opportunities as well as dangers they bring.
Gamble, formerly professor of politics at Sheffield University, is author of The Spectre at the Feast: Capitalist crisis and the politics of recession.
The second meeting on ‘Class, economy and skill: why the estate should support young people’ will be led by Dr Denise Thursfield of Hull University, a member of Labour’s National Policy Forum, on 21 November.
Cruddas is booked for 20 February 2013. The MP for Dagenham and Rainham was appointed by Labour leader Ed Miliband to lead the party’s policy review.
The meetings will be held in the Hall and Bar at the Burton Street Foundation in Sheffield. They will start at 18:30 with a buffet (costing £7) and informal conversation, with the lecture beginning at 19:30. The full details are:
