Principle 5, Sheffield’s co-operative resource centre, has launched a new website to promote its collection of books, articles and periodicals about all aspects of the co-operative movement.
Known as P5, the Yorkshire Co-operative Resource Centre is named after Principle 5 of the International Statement of Co-operative Identity, which states:
Education, Training and Information
Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public – particularly young people and opinion leaders – about the nature and benefits of co-operation.
The purpose of the Principle 5 is to provide information and educational support to both existing and proposed co-operatives in the Yorkshire area. Based at the co-operatively-owned Aizlewood’s Mill in Sheffield, home of the Sheffield Co-operative Development Group, the centre is a friendly and accessible place where anyone can learn more about the co-operative movement.
Its collection of co-operative educational and research resources began with back editions of Co-operative News, and both old and new editions of that publication remain a key part of the available resources.
However, the centre also has its own lending library while it is a well-used venue for talks, study groups and film screenings.
The new website includes a full list of all the books in the library, plus articles, archives and links to other co-operative organisations.
