Left of centre think tanks Compass and Progress are joining forces at the end of April to host a discussion on Labour’s approach to public sector reform with Jon Cruddas, coordinator of the party’s policy review process.
‘Can Labour learn to trust the people?’ is billed as a chance to chat with Liz Kendall MP, Labour’s shadow minister for care and older people, Lisa Nandy MP, shadow minister for civil society and Claire Kober, leader of Haringey council in north London.
The meeting is partly a response to recent speeches by Cruddas and Labour leader Ed Miliband on public sector reform. These, say Compass, set out “the beginnings of what could shape up to be a radical set of policies to put to the electorate come 2015”.
“The next election will shape the future of this country profoundly. Realistically Labour are the only progressive party with a chance of being at least the major party in a government, so the message they choose is of utmost importance.
“Following speeches on public sector reform by both Ed Miliband and Jon Cruddas there are the beginnings of what could shape up to be a radical set of policies to put to the electorate come 2015.
“However this will only happen if Labour put faith in the people who elect them, not if they go for the safe top down approach some are calling for. We are holding this event to look at whether Labour can trust the people and in practical terms for the party’s policy offer in 2015.”
